1/720 Italeri CVN-71

USS Theodore Roosevelt

A ship at ARC?! Oh, no! In fact I saw that category "Aircraft Carriers" at the gallery. And only one entry. I have to change that! This model is one of Italeri's supercarriers in 1/720 detailed by photo etched parts of Gold Metal Models (GMM).

The planes of the Italeri kit are quite bad (only the Sea King helicopter is aboard), so two Sky Wave packs were used to do the Tomcats, Hornets, Intruders, Prowlers and Hawkeyes.

The aircraft are 1/700 scale, so difference is about almost 3%. Anybody noticed? The decals of the planes came with their kit. I like the high-viz style, but experts would remark, that it is the wrong carrier air wing on this carrier. The Sundowner-Tomcats are just visitors!

The crewmen on the flightdeck are photoetched guys made by GMM. Handpainted with Revell-paints. The colours of their clothes tell you something about the job they do. Do not zoom, there are no beards or eyes painted.

It would be a nice idea to do this ten times bigger – in scale 1/72! To build 80 planes and choppers would be the minor problem, but what about the carrier? When to build this and where to put it???

Of course however this has been done already. I saw the WW2 German carrier "Graf Zeppelin" in 1/50 with dozens of Ju-87 and Me-109T at last year's Intermodellbau at Dortmund/Germany.
